Magdalen and Norah are two orphan sisters left without identity and holdings, because of an intricate story of usurped inheritance and dramatic events. They react differently: Norah works as governess, instead wild Magdalen takes the plunge into a series of dangerous and incredible adventures, carrying on with wars against tenacious enemies, trusting only herself and the help of a skilled crook, Mr Wragge.
“No Name” is quite relevant in the English Literature of the past century.

THE AUTHOR

Wilkie Collins was born in London on 8 January1824. His first work Memoirs of the Life of William Collins, dedicated to his father, was published in 1848. It published then two novels: Antonina in 1850 and Basil in 1852. In April of the same year he met Charles Dickens and he wrote for his weekly publication Household Words: this is the beginning of a long work relationship and friendship which lasted ten years. In 1860 was published his first important novel: The Woman in White, a complex story which takes inspiration from a real personal fact.

It followed The Moonstone in 1868, an absorbing novel which is considered his masterpiece. Since 1870, year of Dickens' death, Collins' reputation started going down, he got arthritis and he started using opium, developing paranoia. Collins never married, yet in 1958 he fell in love with Caroline Graves, a widow with whom he lived for several years. With another woman, Martha Rudd, he had three children.

Wilkie Collins died on 23 September 1889 and he was buried in Kensal Green Cemetery.
